Earlier this week my friend, the great slam poet Matt Blesse, e-mailed me a youtube link to a Native Guns song and asked “don’t you have a beat with this sample?” Why yes, I believe I do. This week’s beat goes back to that three-month period where I had a blue MPC 1000. It was an awesome machine, but I got so damn tired of the constant “whirrrr, click, click, whirrrrr whirrrrr, click” that it took to select samples, save and choose effects. (more…)

Farmer’s market in San Luis Obispo nets amazingly fresh produce, delicious barbecue and hilariously bad keyboard players. Yesterday however, a breath of fresh air blew through when I happened upon a man named Scott Williams. He was rocking out on the hammered dulcimer playing Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” Backed by an instrumental track and wearing a mic headset, he would nod his head to the beat, way into his playing and tap his hammers? together when waiting for the instrumental breaks to be over. All I could think while watching is how great a job this would be for a character in a comedy movie – think Saving Silverman’s Neil Diamond cover band. (more…)
My compulsory exercise (biking until I fix my car) has yielded some interesting photo ops. The bike path I take to work goes along the train tracks and at dusk, there’s usually a good view of the Bishop and Madonna peaks. Also, there’s a big red pedestrian overpass that crosses the tracks. My car hasn’t started in two weeks, which isn’t a bad thing actually. I’ve been forced to ride my bike everywhere, even to the grocery store. On my way back from one such trip today I caught a sign that promised wine tasting and a car show. I hit up some friends, only two of which were down to go and we made plans to get pizza in Grover Beach and then sip wine and look at rides. However, as soon as we made it to Grover, I was feelin’ some thrift store action instead. (more…)
On my recent trip home for the fourth of July I took in a home brew contest in downtown Reno with friends. It was a good opportunity to test out the video and photo capabilities of my new iPhone 4 and I’m not disappointed with how it performed. (more…)
It had been seven months since I last saw my family. So, for the fourth of July I took a road trip with my roommates back up to Truckee to spend a quiet weekend playing with my nephew and relaxing with my other relatives. (more…)
